This information is for external/topical use purposes only and is not intended to replace prescribed medication or professional medical advice or to diagnose any type of health condition.

Never ingest essential oils and remember to dilute them with a suitable carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil. This is due to the fact that organic and pure essential oils are highly concentrated liquids and direct use of essential oils on the skin can cause allergic reactions. Caution should be taken if you are a breastfeeding or pregnant mother. Keep out of reach of children.

Speak with your healthcare practitioner before selecting an essential oil that is appropriate for your health situation and unique individual constitution.

Product Description & Production Process

Agarwood Aceh Oil by DDistillers is a premium-grade essential oil extracted from the resinous heartwood of Aquilaria malaccensis trees using traditional steam distillation methods. These trees are grown in the tropical forests of Aceh, Sumatra, under sustainable cultivation practices.

In a process known as artificial inoculation, trees are manually infected at around 10 years of age to stimulate resin formation — a natural biological defense mechanism. The tree is then left for 1.5–2 years, allowing the oleoresin to mature before harvesting and distillation. This long process results in an oil of exceptional aromatic complexity and therapeutic potential.

Chemical Composition & Therapeutic Potential

This oil contains over 70 bioactive compounds, primarily sesquiterpenoids and chromone derivatives, which contribute to its distinctive scent and functional properties. Key compounds include:

  • Agarospirol, jinkohol, α-/β-agarofuran
  • Aquillochin (a couinarinolignan), kusenol, selinene, dihydroagarofuran

Origin, Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing

Aquilaria malaccensis is a tree species native to Southeast Asia and is listed under CITES Appendix II due to overharvesting in the past. DDistillers is committed to ethical sourcing, including:

  • Manual inoculation and selective harvesting
  • Replanting programs and local grower partnerships
  • Compliance with national and international regulations

The trees grow in primary and secondary tropical forests, up to 750 meters above sea level, and can reach up to 50 meters in height. Resin formation occurs only when the tree responds to microbial invasion or physical injury — making the oil rare, valuable, and highly revered.

Cultural & Historical Significance

Agarwood oil has been used for thousands of years in various cultural and spiritual traditions. In Indonesian history, the agarwood trade dates back to the era of the Sriwijaya Kingdom and Barus (on the west coast of Sumatra), where agarwood was exported to the Middle East and South Asia.

Across different religious texts — Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity — agarwood is referenced as a sacred material used in spiritual rituals, meditation practices, and traditional healing. Its oil has long been prized as a luxury perfume, sacred incense, and aromatherapy agent with strong aphrodisiac qualities.

Agarwood is also known by many other names around the world:
Oud, Oudh, Agarwood, Eaglewood, Aloeswood, Karas, Depu, Hau Halim, Kayu Alim, Kayu Kareh [4,5,6].
