PRODUCT
DESCRIPTION
Frangipani
Hydrosol is a high-value co-product obtained through the steam distillation of Plumeria
alba flowers. This distillation yields two primary fractions: essential oil
(oil phase) and hydrosol (aqueous phase). The hydrosol retains water-soluble
volatile molecules and polar bioactive compounds not captured in the essential
oil fraction. These include phenolics and terpenoids with mild biological
activities such as antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. Compared to pure
essential oil, Frangipani Hydrosol is gentler, lighter, and safer for direct
skin application or as a water phase in cosmetic, aromatherapy, and wellness
formulations.
In
terms of specifications, it appears as a clear to slightly cloudy liquid,
colorless to pale yellow depending on raw material and distillation conditions.
Its pH typically ranges from 3–6 (mildly acidic), which naturally supports
microbial stability. It is fully soluble in water and alcohol but insoluble in
oils, making it ideal for emulsions, sprays, lotions, and toners.
Organoleptic
profile: Frangipani Hydrosol carries a delicate, sweet, exotic
floral aroma—reminiscent of fresh tropical blossoms, yet softer than the
absolute or essential oil. The fragrance is soothing and uplifting, often used
in face mists, body sprays, or room sprays. On skin, it delivers a refreshing,
non-irritating, non-greasy sensation. With proper storage (dark glass bottles,
sealed, 10–25 °C, away from light), shelf life ranges between 6–12 months.
Signs of degradation include cloudiness, sour off-notes, or sediment formation.
BOTANICAL
& MORPHOLOGY
Plumeria
alba
(commonly called White Frangipani) belongs to the family Apocynaceae and is
widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Native to the Caribbean
and Central America, it has been introduced across Asia, including Indonesia,
where it holds ornamental, cultural, and spiritual value. Phytochemical studies
show that Plumeria alba flowers and leaves contain phenolic compounds,
flavonoids, terpenoids, and essential oils with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,
and antimicrobial properties.
Botanical
Taxonomy
Morphology
Key
Feature: Its large, fragrant flowers and latex sap, which is
irritating to skin/eyes. Bioactive compounds (alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols)
make it of pharmacological interest.
HISTORY
& USAGE
Plumeria
alba
has long-standing cultural, medicinal, and ornamental significance across
tropical regions. In India, frangipani flowers have been used in Ayurveda for
inflammation, fever, and skin ailments. In Southeast Asia and the Pacific, they
symbolize spirituality, purity, and are widely used in rituals and decorations.
Frangipani
Hydrosol is a relatively modern derivative, emerging as a by-product of steam
distillation originally focused on essential oil extraction. Initially
considered distillation “wastewater,” research has shown hydrosols contain
water-soluble volatiles like linalool and geraniol, offering a softer aroma
with therapeutic benefits. Its commercial application grew alongside the
natural cosmetics and aromatherapy industries during the late 20th century.
