PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Jasmine Hydrosol is an aromatic water-based liquid obtained as a co-product of the steam distillation of Jasminum sambac (L.) Aiton flowers, a fragrant evergreen shrub of the Oleaceae family. During steam distillation, water vapor extracts volatile compounds from jasmine blossoms, producing two phases after condensation: essential oil (upper phase) and hydrosol (lower aqueous phase) rich in water-soluble polar compounds.

Unlike essential oils, hydrosols contain only trace amounts of aromatic molecules, resulting in a much gentler effect while still retaining the characteristic jasmine profile. Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis of jasmine flowers has identified key volatiles such as benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, linalool, indole, cis-jasmone, and methyl anthranilate. A small portion of these compounds diffuses into the hydrosol phase, contributing to its light, exotic, and refreshing floral character.

Physical Specifications: Clear to slightly cloudy liquid, colorless to pale yellow, with a pH of 4.0–6.5 depending on raw material freshness and distillation conditions.
Organoleptic Properties: Sweet, floral, delicate, and refreshing aroma with fruity-green undertones and subtle indolic notes. Softer and lighter than jasmine essential oil or absolute, making it a suitable choice for sensitive skin care. On the skin, it provides a cooling, soothing, and softening effect, popular in face toners, facial mists, body sprays, and natural room sprays.

HISTORY AND USAGE

Hydrosols, also known as floral waters, have been documented since ancient civilizations in Egypt, Persia, India, and the Arab world, used for beauty, medicine, and spiritual rituals. Avicenna (Ibn Sina) in the 10th century refined steam distillation methods, producing both essential oils and hydrosols.

Jasmine (Jasminum sambac) has been used for millennia in Ayurveda (for relaxation, skin care, digestive health), Traditional Chinese Medicine (as tea and herbal tonics), and Southeast Asian culture (in rituals, adornments, and as a symbol of purity). Early forms of jasmine floral water were likely prepared through simple infusion or distillation, though less documented compared to rosewater.

From the 18th–19th century, modern steam distillation enabled commercial essential oil production, with hydrosols initially treated as by-products. By the late 20th century, however, the aromatherapy and natural cosmetics industry recognized jasmine hydrosol as a standalone product: gentler, safer, and more versatile than concentrated essential oils.

Today, jasmine hydrosol is considered an “elixir water” for wellness, skin care, and aromatherapy, bridging traditional heritage with modern green beauty formulations.
