This information
is for external/topical use purposes only and is not intended to replace
prescribed medication or professional medical advice or to diagnose any type of
health condition. Never ingest essential oils and remember to dilute them with
a suitable carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil.
This is due to the
fact that organic and pure essential oils are highly concentrated liquids and
direct use of essential oils on the skin can cause allergic reactions. Caution
should be taken if you are a breastfeeding or pregnant mother. Keep out of reach
of children. Speak with your healthcare practitioner before choosing an
essential oil that is appropriate for your health situation and unique
individual constitution.

BOTANICAL INSIGHTS
Sweet basil is an annual
herbaceous plant that thrives at altitudes of 0–1,500 meters, under both full
sun and partial shade. The plant grows upright to 50–80 cm with quadrangular,
brownish-green stems, and produces fragrant leaves that are ovate, serrated,
and either deep green or purplish. The flowers, white to lilac, grow in
elongated spikes measuring 5–30 cm. Its seeds, dark brown in color, swell into
a gel-like texture when soaked in water—a distinctive characteristic of this
species.
HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL
SIGNIFICANCE
The name “Basil” comes
from the ancient Greek word Basileus, meaning “king,” reflecting its
esteemed status. Belonging to the Ocimum genus—home to over 35 species
including O. americanum, O. campechianum, and O. tenuiflorum—sweet
basil has been cultivated for over 3,000 years.
Across cultures, it
carries different names: Telasih in Java, Selaseh among Malay
communities, and Amping or Kukuru in Minahasa. In English, it is
widely known as Sweet Basil.
Traditionally:
- Ancient Egyptians used it in
religious and funerary rites.
- In Orthodox Christianity, basil often
accompanies holy water rituals.
- In India, Tulsi is considered
sacred and central to Ayurvedic medicine.
Historically consumed
as teas, powders, and essential oils, basil has long been valued for its anti-inflammatory,
antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, antidepressant, and diuretic
properties, making it a cornerstone of traditional medicine across Asia.
