DESCRIPTION

Cajuput Java Essential Oil is obtained through steam distillation of sustainably cultivated Melaleuca cajuputi leaves and twigs from Java. It yields a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a distinctive cineole-rich aroma [1]. Renowned for its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, analgesic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, this oil is widely used in respiratory relief, topical pain formulations, immune support products, and natural wellness applications [2].

BOTANICAL PROFILE

Native to Indonesia, Melaleuca cajuputi naturally occurs in the Maluku Islands (Ambon, Buru, and Seram), Timor, and Northern Australia, and is cultivated as monoculture stands in Java. The tree grows up to 30 meters with distinctive spongy white bark and evergreen foliage. Flowers appear in white, cream, or pale yellow clusters at branch tips. Three subspecies are recognized: cajuputi, cumingiana, and platyphylla [3][4].

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Indonesia is both the largest producer and consumer of cajuput oil, yielding 325–350 MT annually. Traditionally used for cough, colds, headaches, insect bites, and muscular aches, over 90% of the oil supports domestic pharmaceutical demand. Historically introduced to Europe in the 17th century, it was valued for antiseptic, carminative, and analgesic properties. Indigenous Australians used crushed leaves for topical applications and inhalation for respiratory relief. Today, cajuput oil is widely used in respiratory therapies, topical analgesics, and aromatherapy [5].
