PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Agarwood Hydrosol is a valuable co-product derived from the steam distillation of agarwood (Aquilaria spp.), particularly Aquilaria malaccensis, one of the finest agarwood-producing species. Steam distillation yields two fractions: agarwood essential oil and its aromatic water phase (hydrosol). Unlike the concentrated essential oil, the hydrosol contains trace amounts of volatile and semi-volatile compounds along with water-soluble bioactive components, giving it a unique chemical profile.

Agarwood hydrosol is a clear to slightly yellowish liquid with a mildly woody, balsamic, and subtly sweet aroma, significantly lighter than agarwood essential oil. Its pH is neutral to slightly acidic. Organoleptically, it delivers a refined aromatic experience—delicate, soothing, and elegant—while the texture remains water-light, fast-absorbing, and non-oily. Some samples may show a faint yellowish hue due to residual wood compounds. As a water-based medium, hydrosol must also comply with microbiological safety standards to ensure safe application.

BOTANICAL AND MORPHOLOGY

Aquilaria malaccensis, belonging to the family Thymelaeaceae, is a tree of high economic, ecological, and cultural value. It is distributed across Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Agarwood is formed when the tree’s heartwood is infected by fungi or injured, stimulating the production of highly aromatic resin that is widely valued in perfumery, cosmetics, and traditional medicine.

Morphological Characteristics:

  • Tree Size: Medium to large tropical tree, reaching up to 40 meters in height.
  • Leaves: Lanceolate, glossy on the surface.
  • Flowers: Small, yellowish-green.
  • Fruits: Capsule-shaped, containing 1–2 seeds.
  • Habitat: Tropical rainforests with high rainfall, sandy loam or humus-rich soil, up to 750 m above sea level.

Due to overexploitation, Aquilaria malaccensis is listed as a protected species under CITES.

HISTORY AND USAGE

Agarwood (oud) has been treasured for thousands of years for use in religious rituals, incense, perfumery, and traditional medicine. However, agarwood hydrosol is a relatively recent by-product, emerging with modern distillation practices.

Historically, the focus was on burning agarwood wood chips or extracting essential oil for incense, perfumery, and ceremonial practices. Trade in agarwood between Southeast Asia and the Middle East, India, China, and Japan has flourished for centuries.

With the advancement of steam distillation and hydrodistillation, producers obtained both essential oil (oud oil) and aromatic water (hydrosol). Agarwood hydrosol captures polar water-soluble volatile compounds—sometimes described as the “water fragrance” of agarwood. Modern studies highlight its antioxidant and bioactive potential, though research is still less extensive compared to agarwood essential oil.

Today, agarwood hydrosol finds applications in cosmetics (toners, fragrance mists), aromatherapy, and spa products, aligning with zero-waste principles by utilizing both fractions of the distillation process.
