Product Description & Production
Process
Agarwood
Merauke Oil is a premium essential oil extracted via steam distillation from
the resin-enriched heartwood of Aquilaria malaccensis grown in Papua's
tropical forests under sustainable agroforestry programs. Trees are manually
inoculated when approximately 10 years old to stimulate natural resin formation
in response to fungal infection (e.g. Fusarium, Phialophora).
After a maturation period of 1.5–2 years, the resinous wood is harvested and
distilled, producing an oil rich in aromatic sesquiterpenes and chromones with
luxurious depth and aromatic complexity.

Origin & Sustainability Practices
A.
malaccensis is endemic to
Southeast Asia and classified as vulnerable or critically endangered due to
overharvesting and habitat loss. DDistillers engages in
selective harvesting, replanting initiatives, and community-based cultivation
to support both conservation and local economies. Resin only forms in response
to natural stress or infection, emphasizing the oil’s rarity and ecological
value.
Cultural & Historical Significance
Historically,
agarwood was central to maritime trade hubs like the Sriwijaya Empire in
Sumatra. Indigenous groups, such as the Batak of Porsea, transported gaharu via
river routes to Middle Eastern markets. Known locally by names like Karas,
Depu, Hau Halim, Kayu Alim, Kayu Kareh, it is
globally recognized as Oud, Agarwood, Eaglewood, Aloeswood. Revered across Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, and Christian
traditions, agarwood has been used in spiritual rituals, perfumery, and
traditional therapeutics.
