GENERAL APPLICATIONS

Traditionally and in modern usage, candlenut oil serves as:

  • Skin emollient: Moisturizes dry, cracked, or flaky skin.
  • Hair treatment: Softens hair, adds shine, and reduces dryness.
  • Cosmetic ingredient: Base oil for massage oils, lotions, and facial serums.

THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS (EVIDENCE-BASED)

  • Hair Growth: Nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) formulations with 5% candlenut oil in animal models enhanced hair growth, likely due to essential fatty acids nourishing hair follicles.
  • Psoriasis & Dry Skin: Small clinical trials show kukui oil is safe as a moisturizer; however, its anti-psoriasis effect was not significantly different from mineral oil (further research needed).
  • Antioxidant & Anti-inflammatory: Demonstrates antioxidant activity in DPPH and FRAP assays and potential anti-inflammatory effects in in-vitro models.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Grade B Candlenut (Kukui) Oil is a vegetable oil extracted from Aleurites moluccanus seeds using a hot pressing method at approximately 80–120 °C. This grade is derived from seeds that are still suitable for processing but not entirely premium quality (including darker-colored or smaller-sized seeds), resulting in different sensory attributes compared to Grade A.

Hot pressing increases oil yield and deactivates oxidative enzymes (e.g., lipase and lipoxygenase). However, a combination of lower raw material quality and heat exposure can reduce levels of heat-sensitive bioactive compounds.

Key Characteristics:

  • Color: Medium golden-yellow to yellowish-brown, generally darker than Grade A.
  • Aroma: Strong roasted nut scent, more pronounced than Grade A.
  • Viscosity: Low; easily absorbed by the skin.
  • Oxidative Stability: More resistant to enzymatic degradation due to heat inactivation; however, still requires proper storage due to its high iodine value.

Fatty Acid Composition (GC-MS):

  • Linoleic acid (C18:2): ± 40–55%
  • α-Linolenic acid (C18:3): ± 14–20%
  • Oleic acid (C18:1): ± 12–17%
  • Palmitic acid (C16:0): ± 5–6%
  • Stearic acid (C18:0): ± 2–3%

Bioactive Compounds:
Contains tocopherols (Vitamin E) and minor phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity, though generally in lower amounts compared to cold-pressed or hot press Grade A oils due to both raw material quality and heat processing.

Recommended Applications:
Ideal for use as a base ingredient in cosmetic formulations, massage oils, soap making, and hair treatments where premium sensory attributes are not the primary priority.
